"The Magic of Metal Clay"
March 14, 2012 10AM till 4PM May repeat, check in May.
Class cost of $135 includes all materials and use of tools.
Learn to work with metal clay silver and copper in this introductory jewelry fabrication workshop. Metal clay consists of finely ground pure metal particles, recycled from industrial uses. The metal particles are combined with an organic binder and water to form a clay that is then hand-shaped, textured, and carved. The dried pieces are fired in a kiln, resulting in pure metal – truly modern alchemy! In this one-day workshop, students will form, fire and polish up to 3 jewelry pieces – a pendant, pair of earrings, or bracelet links – all from start to finish. No experience necessary.

Learn the basics of jewelry enameling using fine silver. In this two-day class, students will fabricate silver pieces using either metal clay or sheet silver. Learn the principles of designing items suitable for enameling, then form the designs using metal fabrication techniques of sawing, filing, forming, texturing and polishing. If the metal clay option is used, hand forming, shaping, and kiln firing techniques will be used. Once the basic shapes are prepared, learn to add color to the pieces through the techniques of sifting, sgraffito and wet-packed enamels. In this class, we will use a small glass kiln to fire the enamels onto the silver. Complete at least one pendant and earring set, or a linked bracelet. No experience necessary. Class cost $270, includes all materials and use of tools and equipment.
