The Arts Cabins Project was created to not only bring quality arts and cultural instruction to The Village of Government Camp, it's residents, artists and visitors...but to also employee artists by providing a studio setting at the 4,000 ft. level of Mount Hood. With it's opening of the first cabin, finally, a warm, equipped studio space was available for instructors to hold workshops & classes. The two cabins are ex- USFS Ranger residences located off The Timberline Road. The Arts Cabins partners with The Forest Service, Zig Zag, Mt. Hood National Forest to create Studios for the project.
Spaces include a small blacksmithing shop soon to move to a larger facility, glass studio with large overhead ventilation system, 2 large kilns and 2 smaller annealing kilns, and 4 minor burners for torch work. Both cabins have upper painting/ drawing and multi use studios, as well as a fiber arts studio in the Lower Arts Cabin.
The project relies on grants, foundations, donors and a small income from sales from The Mountain Gallery located in The Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum. Revenue is also generated from the Annual Blacksmith & Artisans Holiday sale each November.
